Open Source as easy as windows...

I have to start telling people about ubuntu - the easiest linux I have found which I am certain everyone who can use windows could easily master. I believe that in the amount of time it takes a user who is comfortable in Windows XP takes to get used to Windows Vista - the same person could feel right at home on this open source operating system.

The distributions on the web are free - it is one of the main goals of the software to be completely open source. That last sentence is good and bad, as it means you will have to get proprietary drivers and software (like mp3 support or network card drivers to enable WPA) but the amount of guides online are so plentiful that I am certain you will find answers to most all of your questions. If anyone is interested in finding out more about the operating system of the future - here is a couple of websites to check out:

HD Radio?!

OK, so HD Radio is the radio industry's response to XM and Sirius...I personally haven't listened to any stations yet, though I do know of several here in the Miami area that are offering the HD broadcasts. It sounds like its going to be like the digital music stations that cable offers. I was perusing a website that was promoting HD radio and came across bullet points why this radio format will be so much better than normal radio (um yea sure). Here are the bullets...the last one definitely makes me want to listen....NOT!

==>New kinds of programs you’ve never listened to before
==>New experimental formats that no one has ever heard

Let's see.....how about "bob and jim in the backyard with rocks and sticks?" or maybe "Cats screeching at midnight?"

I can't wait to hear this new experiMENTAL format!

free domain name!?

Microsoft has started offering free domain name registration and web space to promote their new officelive suite.

Goto Office Live and sign up there. MS is offering a free domain name and web space as long as you have a passport account setup. Make sure that you sign up for the free service. There are 3 different choices, I believe the first choice is the free one. (let me know if that is not correct.) They also ask for a credit card # for verification purposes to ensure you are who you say you are. You also get 5 email accounts as well.

My Media, any where

I discovered and downloaded a rather interesting utility, called Orb. Orb is a service which runs on a machine you have at your house to deliver any of the media or files you have to you anywhere you have access to the web.

If you have a tuner card in your machine, you can also view live tv just like sitting in front of your own tv. It works quite well so far.

I also loaded Slipstream Squeezebox on the 'server' at home and it will stream mp3s to any machine as long as you open the correct ports. The only downfall - the stream takes up to 5 minutes to actually start playing. Shoot m

Net Neutrality

Net Neutrality was passed by the House... seems as though the big telephone and cable companies have more than one way to stay in business. Charge the people who create inovative ways to use the web more money because they are more popular!!

Skype Out for Free

Skype Out is now free to call anyone in the US and Canada - any telephone, be it land line or mobile. This is truelly revolutionary. I am waiting to see what the big boys - like Verizon and Bell South and even Vonage will do to conteract this. It looks like they already have a plan. Thats right - just make it illegal to offer free calling. Can you imagine how different the business landscape will be in 200 years. Technology eliminates entire Tiers of Companies.

Build it or Buy it, that is the question

I am of course, referring to personal computers. My preference is to build my own. The reasons are as follows;

1. Pick your parts. Pick any parts, from motherboard, to video card, to power supply, to hard drive, to DVD drive, to the case. Each piece is not a compromise, each piece is normally reviewed on several websites, so I know what to expect when I purchase, and normally get the lowest price available, for the highest quality hardware.
2. Putting the pieces together. The actual assembly of the hardware is a learning experience. It is not as difficult as some imagine. It does often times require troubleshooting why a fan is not spinning up, or why you are getting no display, but, as long as you don’t give up, the end result is a hand built machine, not unlike some of the custom cars of today.

Windows on a Mac?! Sacrilege!

Check out this article: -->Windows on a Mac

Looks like Apple is going to promote running WindowsXP on a Mac. They are going to release a program that will let this happen after two hackers got Xp to install on a Mac (with the intel core) This is supposed to run native, without the "SoftPC" crap that Mac users had to run before to emulate windows.

Welcome to the Borg, you will be assimilated!
