Successful Intervention

We've beaten our addiction to oil.

Just last summer it looked as if we'd never be able to pull away from the pump. Our only option was to keep filling our tanks to feed our insatiable demand. A few months later and Americans are using less gas then in the past decade.

From CNBC.com:

Total U.S. petroleum deliveries—a measure of demand—averaged just 19.6 million barrels per day (bpd) in the January-October period, the lowest level since 2000 and a decline of 5 percent against the same period for 2007.

This drop in demand has pushed the price of a barrel of gasoline close to $50 a barrel and looks to be on a downward trend.

So what was the catalyst that moved America to become a nation of fuel sippers? A complete economic meltdown. I guess that's why no one is celebrating.
